How TalkNote from Rare Inc. (operated by RARE INC LTD) designs inclusive voice and web experiences across iOS, iPadOS, Android, talknote.live, and talknote.co.

WCAG 2.1 Level AA & Native Assistive Technology Support

TalkNote from Rare Inc. (operated by RARE INC LTD) is designed to align with WCAG 2.1 Level AA, Apple VoiceOver, Android TalkBack, Dynamic Type, and reduced-motion preferences.

1. Our Commitment to Digital Accessibility

RARE INC LTD ("Rare Inc."), the operator of TalkNote from Rare Inc. ("TalkNote"), believes that human connection and voice expression should be accessible to everyone, regardless of disability or assistive technology use. Because TalkNote is an audio-first platform, it naturally lowers barriers for users with visual impairments, dyslexia, or motor difficulties who prefer speaking and listening over typing on small keyboards—while also requiring thoughtful visual and text alternatives for Deaf and hard-of-hearing community members.

2. Conformance Standards

We strive to design, build, and maintain talknote.co, talknote.live, and our native iOS, iPadOS, and Android applications in alignment with:

  • The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C);
  • The European Accessibility Act (EAA) and EN 301 549 accessibility standards;
  • The UK Equality Act 2010 and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) digital accessibility principles; and
  • Apple Human Interface Guidelines for Accessibility (iOS / iPadOS) and Google Android Accessibility Guidelines.

3. Key Accessibility Features Across TalkNote

  • Screen Reader Support (Apple VoiceOver, Android TalkBack & Desktop Screen Readers): Interactive controls—including Record, Play/Pause, Like, Repost, Comment, Follow, Block, and Report buttons—are built with semantic HTML landmarks, ARIA labels on Web (aria-label, aria-expanded, role="status"), and Flutter Semantics annotations on mobile.
  • Voice Note Captions & Speech-to-Text Support: Creators can attach text captions (caption) to every Voice Note and story, and our iOS application integrates native Speech Recognition (NSSpeechRecognitionUsageDescription) to assist with generating readable transcriptions of spoken notes.
  • Visual Acoustic Waveforms & Haptic Feedback: Audio playback is accompanied by animated visual waveform amplitude bars, playback timers, and optional tactile haptic feedback (sounds_haptics toggle in Settings) so users can perceive recording and playback states visually and physically.
  • High-Contrast Typography & Responsive Scaling: Our dark and light surfaces are engineered with high-contrast text hierarchies and scalable clamp() / rem typography that respects browser zoom up to 200% and operating-system Dynamic Type settings without horizontal content loss.
  • Reduced Motion Support: We respect system-level prefers-reduced-motion: reduce preferences to minimise non-essential animations and transitions for users with vestibular sensitivities.
  • Keyboard Navigation & Focus States: Our web interfaces at talknote.co and talknote.live support keyboard tab navigation (Tab, Shift+Tab, Enter, Space, Escape) with visible focus indicators.

4. Known Limitations & Audio-First Workarounds

While we work continuously to improve accessibility across every surface, we want to be transparent about current limitations inherent to real-time user-generated audio:

  • User-Generated Voice Notes & Live Audio Without Captions: Because Voice Notes, audio comments, and Live Audio broadcasts are recorded spontaneously by independent users worldwide in diverse languages, regional accents, and acoustic environments, not every user-uploaded recording includes a creator-provided caption or automated transcript. Users who require text alternatives may enable operating-system Live Captions (available on iOS 16+, macOS Sonoma+, and Android 10+ devices) to transcribe any audio playing from TalkNote in real time on their device.
  • Third-Party External Shares: When content is shared to third-party platforms (such as Instagram, Snapchat, or WhatsApp), the accessibility of those external interfaces is governed by their respective providers.

5. Feedback, Assistance & Regulatory Escalation

We welcome feedback on the accessibility of TalkNote from Rare Inc. If you encounter an accessibility barrier on talknote.co, talknote.live, or our iOS/Android apps, or if you need information from any of our legal policies in an alternative accessible format (such as large print or plain-text audio), please contact us:

We aim to acknowledge accessibility inquiries promptly and work with you to provide the information or fix you need. If you are dissatisfied with our response, you may also contact the relevant national enforcement body in your jurisdiction (such as the Equality Advisory and Support Service (EASS) / Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) in the United Kingdom, your national European Accessibility authority in the EEA, or the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division).
